John Abercrombie: It takes more than love

John Abercrombie has emerge as one of the more original jazz guitar stylists on the scene today.

Born in Portchester,N.Y., in 1944, he has been playing guitar almost half his life. After attending the Berklee College of Music from 1962-66, he went on the road with organist Johnny Hammond. There followed tours with the Brecker Brothers in the jazz-rock group Dreams, Chico Hamilton, Jeremy Steig, Gil Evans and Gato Barbieri.

Appearing with Billy Cobham’s Spectrum at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Abercrombie met ECM’s Manfred Eicher and their collaboration has continued through today. He has recorded almost 20 albums for the West German label, including “Timeless” (ECM 1047), his first as a leader; the solo album “Characters” (ECM 1117); “Gateway” (ECM 1061) with Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland”, “Sargasso Sea” (ECM 1080), a duo with Ralph Towner, and several albums with Jack DeJohnette’s Directions.
